Transfer Station Guidelines

  • Transfer station open to residents and landowners of the Town of Middletown only.

  • Users must first obtain a permit sticker from Town Clerk. Permit stickers are free for Middletown residents.

  • To receive a permit sticker, bring proof of residency (tax/utility bill or deed) and vehicle registration to the Town Clerk’s office.

  • Permit sticker must be affixed to passenger rear side window.

  • All solid waste deposited in plastic bags must be in clear plastic bags.

  • NO BLACK BAGS.

  • To prevent litter, NYS law requires all loads to be covered during transport.

Commercial Haulers

Haulers unloading at the same time as the public, must give the public first approach to the compactor and are required to follow any special instructions given by the Transfer Station Manager.


Accepted Materials

Municipal Solid Waste

(Plastic garbage bags must be clear)

  • Non-hazardous household waste. Includes: packaging, foils, plastic films, non-recyclable containers and lids, kitchen and bathroom trash, food scraps, disposable tableware and tissues.

 

Clothing & Accessories

  • Clean and dry clothing and shoes.

 

Plastic, Metal & Glass Containers

(Loose, empty, rinsed clean)

  • #1 - #7 plastic bottles and jugs

  • Glass bottles, jars, & containers

  • Metal food and beverage containers

  • Aluminum cans, pans & trays

  • NO plastic bags, NO string or wire

  • NO Styrofoam

 

Corrugated Cardboard

  • Dry & clean cardboard, cut to 36" or smaller

  • NO plastic bags, NO string or wire

 

Mixed Paper

  • Dry & clean newspaper, inserts, magazines, junk mail, office paper, computer paper, copier paper, phone books, & paperbacks.

  • NO plastic bags, NO string or wire

 

Scrap Metal

  • Metal items and scrap

  • Box springs clean of fabric and wood

  • White goods and appliances without freon

Special Wastes

  • Paint cans with residual paint must be dried out or filled with cat litter prior to disposal. Empty and clean paint cans can be recycled with scrap metal.

  • Mattresses and bulky furniture are considered construction and demolition debris. Box springs must have the fabric and wood removed for recycling with scrap metal.

  • House/ Apartment clean outs are subject to all solid waste and recycling guidelines.

  • Litter clean ups, illegal dumping and litter in black bags will be investigated to identify the illegal dumper.

  • Household batteries are accepted for recycling at the Transfer Station. Bring wet cell vehicle batteriesto Solid Waste Management Center in Walton for recycling.

  • Appliances that do not contain freon are accepted at Transfer Station as scrap metal.

  • TV sets, computer monitors, and electronics are considered hazardous waste by the USEPA. These items are accepted for recycling at the Transfer Station. Please ask your Transfer Station Manager for more information.


Prohibited Materials

Construction & Demolition Debris (C&D)

  • Bring C&D debris to Solid Waste Management Center in Walton. C&D includes structural debris, insulation, lumber, roofing, siding, drywall, plaster, flooring, carpeting, tile, plastic sheeting, bale wrap, furniture, mattresses, tubing and hoses.

Burn Barrel Ashes

Dead Animals and Carcasses

  • Lime and bury animals and carcasses on property.

Hazardous or Toxic Materials

  • Includes: fluorescent and mercury vapor lights and ballasts, transformers, paints and pesticides. Save for Clean Sweep event in the Fall.

Junk Vehicle, Body Or Chassis

  • Bring to a scrap dealer.

Leaves, Yard Wastes, Green or Leafy Wood

  • Chip and/or compost this material at home.

Liquids of Any Kind

Refrigerators, Freezers, Air Conditioners

  • Bring freon containing appliances to the Solid Waste Management Center in Walton for recycling.

Used Motor Oil & Antifreeze

  • Bring to your local service station or the Solid Waste Management Center in Walton.

Clean Sweep Program
The Delaware County Solid Waste Management Center holds an annual Clean Sweep event in the Fall for hazardous materials. Watch local newspapers and the Town Hall sign board for details. Registration is required.
